Spice Girls Snub Louis Theroux’s Girlband Documentary

As fans count down to the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls’ debut single Wannabe, the legendary pop group has made a bold decision: they’ve refused to take part in a new Louis Theroux documentary focusing on girlbands.

The upcoming BBC project, expected to be titled Girlbands Forever, is set to explore the rise, fall, and reinvention of some of the biggest female pop acts from the '90s and 2000s. But while the show promises candid interviews and behind-the-scenes revelations, the Spice Girls are steering well clear.

A TV insider revealed:

“The difference is that the Spice Girls are fast approaching 30 years since the release of their debut single Wannabe and have a string of projects in the pipeline.”

Fans of Louis Theroux will recall last year’s Boybands Forever, a raw and revealing look into the pressures faced by male pop groups, including emotional contributions from Robbie Williams, who spoke openly about his troubled time in Take That.

But the Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Mel B, are reportedly united in their belief that now is not the time to dwell on the past.

“None of the Spice Girls want to do the same,” the source added. “They feel it wouldn’t be fair on their loyal fans to spoil the magic of Girl Power so close to their anniversary year.”

With 2026 marking three decades of Spice-mania, the group is believed to be working on a series of celebratory projects, including potential tour dates, a reissue of classic hits, and other major media tie-ins.

Meanwhile, Girlbands Forever is expected to feature interviews and stories from other iconic groups such as Girls Aloud, All Saints, Sugababes, Eternal and Atomic Kitten, each with their own highs, lows, and powerful legacies.

Fans hoping for a tell-all Spice Girls reunion on camera will have to wait, but if the rumours of big 30th anniversary plans are true, there’s still plenty to shout “Zig-a-zig-ah!” about in the near future.
