Ricky Gervais Gets Hollywood Star – And Drops Another Controversial Joke

British comedian Ricky Gervais has officially cemented his legacy in showbiz, and in stone, after receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday. But true to form, the After Life creator didn’t collect his honour quietly.

During his acceptance speech on Hollywood Boulevard, Gervais stirred the pot yet again with a controversial joke referencing several celebrities who, like him, now share a slab of fame, but with far more infamous reputations.

“Thank you so much for this honour. It's a genuine thrill to be part of such an exclusive club,” Gervais began, before toeing the line with a typically provocative gag. “And just looking around earlier at all the other stars, absolute icons, you know? Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, Fatty Arbuckle.”

The joke sparked audible gasps and nervous laughter from the crowd, with many pointing out the comedian’s decision to name three stars who were all accused of sexual assault, two acquitted (Jackson and silent film star Arbuckle), and one, Bill Cosby, who was convicted before his sentence was later overturned.

While Gervais’ comment immediately reignited debate about the limits of humour, fans weren’t surprised. The 63-year-old has built a career out of being deliberately controversial, most memorably during his no-holds-barred Golden Globes hosting stints.

The moment was covered widely across entertainment media, with Variety quoting his speech and noting the expected mix of applause and discomfort among attendees. Gervais has not commented further on the reaction to his speech, but it’s likely he anticipated the controversy. After all, challenging taboos has long been a key part of his comedy DNA.

Despite the edgy joke, the event was also a celebration of Gervais’ significant impact on both British and international comedy. From co-creating the iconic The Office, to Netflix hits like Derek and After Life, and sell-out stand-up tours, Gervais has carved out a global fanbase with his mix of sharp wit, dark humour, and heartfelt moments.

Now immortalised on Hollywood’s most famous sidewalk, Gervais joins the ranks of the very stars he often mocks, a fact that wasn’t lost on him, and, in typical fashion, became the perfect punchline.
