Zara McDermott has shocked her fans by announcing she’s taking a break from social media, and the reason has left thousands of people emotional and inspired.
The former Love Island contestant and documentary filmmaker revealed on Instagram Stories that she’s stepping away from the digital spotlight to focus on her latest, and most personal, project to date: a powerful documentary centred around domestic abuse, coercive control, and tech abuse.
Zara explained: “I also just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who messaged me with regards to the story I posted the other day. If you didn’t see it; I spoke about developing my next documentary and how I’ve been thinking of how to create a project about domestic abuse, coercive control and tech abuse.”
She went on to say that she’s been overwhelmed by the response from followers, having received “thousands of messages” from people who wanted to share their stories.
“It’s so nice speaking to you all because I’ve definitely taken a bit of a step back from socials to focus on my documentaries and other work,” she shared. “Social media feels quite heavy and a negative space sometimes… so to be able to feel like we can work together to do something super positive is a great feeling.”
Zara’s move has been widely praised, with fans flooding her DMs to show support. Her ongoing commitment to raising awareness around difficult social issues through documentaries continues to set her apart from her reality TV peers.
This will be her fifth documentary for the BBC, following previous hits like Revenge Porn, Disordered Eating, and Rape Culture in the UK. Each has helped spark vital national conversations, especially among young viewers.
Zara ended her message by saying: “Forever grateful to all of you who continue to support the work I do. It really means SO much.”
