WEDNESDAY SPIN-OFF: UNCLE FESTER SERIES IN THE WORKS

Fans of Wednesday have something new to look forward to, a spin-off series about Uncle Fester is officially in development. Fred Armisen, who plays the eccentric, electric Addams Family member, confirmed the news during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

When asked about long-standing rumours of a Fester-centred show, Armisen said: “Yeah, we’re working on it. It’s fantastic… it’s amazing.” He went on to praise Wednesday director and executive producer Tim Burton, calling him “amazing” and adding: “He’s great, great, great.”

Armisen stopped short of revealing any plot details or casting news, suggesting the project is still in the early stages of development. Netflix has yet to issue an official statement about the spin-off, but the confirmation from the star himself is enough to send the internet into overdrive.

Uncle Fester, one of the most iconic characters in the Addams Family universe, made his debut appearance on Wednesday during the first season, much to fans’ delight. Armisen’s quirky, slightly unhinged portrayal quickly became a highlight of the show, with many viewers calling for more screen time for the character.

This isn’t the first time talk of a spin-off has surfaced. Earlier this year, Wednesday showrunner and co-creator Alfred Gough spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about potential future projects. “It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at,” he teased. Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria echoed this sentiment, hinting there’s still “a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”

Fans have been speculating about what an Uncle Fester series could look like. Some hope to see Fester’s backstory explored in more depth, how he became the mysterious, mischievous figure we know and love, while others want to see him team up with Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) or other Addams Family favourites for even stranger adventures.

The original Wednesday series, which premiered on Netflix in 2022, became a global phenomenon. It broke streaming records and turned Jenna Ortega into a household name thanks to her deadpan portrayal of Wednesday Addams. The gothic coming-of-age comedy-drama was praised for its balance of dark humour, supernatural thrills, and emotional depth, and it was quickly renewed for a second season, which is currently in production.

If Netflix gives the Uncle Fester spin-off the green light, it would mark the streaming giant’s first official expansion of the Wednesday universe. With Tim Burton’s unique gothic style and Armisen’s comedic timing, the series has the potential to be another major hit.

For now, details remain under wraps, but if Armisen’s enthusiasm is anything to go by, Uncle Fester’s next chapter is going to be a wild, weird, and wickedly fun ride.
