U2’s The Edge Becomes an Irish Citizen: “A Monumental Day” for the Guitar Legend
U2 guitarist The Edge has officially become an Irish citizen, decades after making the Emerald Isle his home. Born David Howell Evans in Essex, England, to Welsh parents, The Edge moved to Ireland with his family when he was just one year old, and now, he’s finally made it official.
The legendary musician received his Irish citizenship during a special naturalisation ceremony in Killarney, Co Kerry, on Monday. The event was part of a wider series of ceremonies in which 7,500 people are set to be granted Irish citizenship this week.
Wearing his signature beanie hat and proudly sporting an Irish flag badge on his lapel, The Edge told RTÉ: “For all of us, a monumental day.”
He went on to describe the atmosphere as an “amazingly joyful event,” marking the occasion as one of personal significance after so many years living in Ireland.
“I’m a little tardy on the paperwork,” he joked. “I’ve been living in Ireland since I was one, but the time was right and I couldn’t be more proud of my country for all that it represents and all it’s doing.”
The Edge praised Ireland for its values and leadership on the global stage: “It’s showing real leadership right now in the world and this couldn’t have come at a better moment for me.”

His official recognition as an Irish citizen comes as U2 continue their record-breaking Las Vegas residency at the Sphere, pushing the boundaries of live performance technology. Despite his international fame, The Edge’s heart has always remained in Ireland, and this formal step only cements that deep connection.
Fans have flooded social media with messages of congratulations, praising the guitarist not only for his music but also for the humility and pride he brings to his Irish identity.
It’s a proud moment for U2 fans across Ireland, and a fitting tribute to a man who has helped define Irish rock on a global scale.
