Two beaches closed in the south of Tenerife due to faecal bacteria contamination are reopened

The Adeje Town Council has reopened Troya I (Playa Las Americas) and El Puertito (Costa Adeje) beaches that were closed to swimmers on Thursday following the detection of faecal bacteria in the water.

The two beaches, located in the south of Tenerife, had been temporarily closed due to what authorities initially described as “adverse analytical results” after routine water testing revealed the presence of Escherichia coli (E.coli) at Troya I and Enterococcus bacteria at El Puertito.

Both bacteria are commonly found in the intestines of humans and can reach the sea through wastewater outfalls, large pipes that discharge treated water from sewage treatment plants deep into the ocean. However, changing sea currents can carry these contaminants back to the surface and towards the coastline.

The two affected beaches join a growing list of bathing areas across Tenerife that have been impacted by water quality issues. Troya I and El Puertito follow the earlier closure of La Jaquita beach in El Médano (municipality of Granadilla), where elevated levels of E.coli were detected earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz, on the island’s north coast, has remained closed since July 2024 due to a malfunction in the underwater outfall pipe that has yet to be repaired.

Authorities continue to monitor water quality across the island, urging residents and tourists to pay attention to official advisories and signage at local beaches.
