Tom Cruise has officially been declared an 'honorary Brit' as the British Film Institute (BFI) prepares to celebrate his extraordinary contributions to the UK film industry over the past 40 years.
The Hollywood megastar, who first relocated to Britain in 2020 to film back-to-back Mission: Impossible movies, has cemented his special relationship with the UK both professionally and personally. Speaking about the prestigious BFI honour, Cruise said: "I'm truly honoured, I've been making films in the UK for over 40 years and have no plans to stop."
Far more than just a working visitor, Cruise has embraced British life with gusto. In recent years, he has been spotted soaking up the best of British culture, attending Wimbledon, celebrating Victoria Beckham’s star-studded 50th birthday, and even playing a part in significant royal events such as King Charles’ Coronation and the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. His growing circle of British friends includes familiar faces like David and Victoria Beckham, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, and even members of the Royal Family, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
In a 2022 interview with The Mirror, Cruise opened up about his affection for the UK, saying: "I guess I am an Anglophile. I spend a lot of time in Britain and that's not just for work reasons. I just love being here."
He continued, "It's a fantastic blend of old and new. I love seeing the sights, the Tower of London, Nelson’s Column, Buckingham Palace and all those fantastic places which are just full of history. Britain is trendy, too, and has a lot that other countries then copy. I also love the British countryside."
Tom’s long-standing commitment to working in Britain has not gone unnoticed within the industry. He has filmed major scenes across iconic locations from London to the Lake District and has consistently praised the UK's talented crews, historic studios, and stunning landscapes as among the best in the world for filmmaking.
With no signs of slowing down and a clear passion for British culture, Tom Cruise’s honorary Brit status feels like a natural next chapter for the action star. As he gears up for new projects and continues to make the UK his second home, it seems that Britain and its adopted movie icon are a perfect match.
