The Script Reveal They Nearly Missed Glastonbury Return After Speedboat Mishap

Irish pop-rockers The Script lit up Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage with a hit-filled set, but their long-awaited return almost didn’t happen.

Frontman Danny O’Donoghue revealed backstage that he was left battered and bruised just hours before the band’s big moment, after a chaotic speedboat ride in Cardiff nearly sidelined him.

“It was kick-ass,” Danny admitted. “For about two hours, I think they were trying their best to get us to crash and not show up to Glastonbury. My knees are in bits!”

Describing the wild pre-show adventure, Danny added: “He (the driver) was trying to do doughnuts and then coming back out. We left the sea more than twice, we went right up and bang, smashed down.”

Despite the pain, the band took to the Pyramid Stage on Saturday for their first Glastonbury performance in 16 years, performing hits like Hall of Fame, The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, and Breakeven to a rapturous crowd.

In a poignant moment, Danny paid tribute on stage to their late bandmate Mark Sheehan, who passed away in 2023. The tribute struck an emotional chord with fans and made the show feel all the more meaningful.

Backstage, the frontman reflected on how far the band had come since their last Glasto appearance. “The first time, I remember feeling too small for the stage,” he said. “Now, coming back, the stage looks quite small. But that’s what 17 years of touring will do for you.”

Despite the near-miss, The Script brought their signature energy and heartfelt lyrics to life, delivering a performance that reminded the Glastonbury faithful exactly why the band has remained a mainstay in UK pop for nearly two decades.

Following the show, the band were seen celebrating late into the night, perhaps with fewer speedboats this time around.
