In a surprising turn from football to theatre, Mia Carragher, daughter of Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher, is stepping into the spotlight as Katniss Everdeen in the world’s first-ever stage adaptation of The Hunger Games.
The 21-year-old rising star has landed the coveted lead role in the production, which will open at London’s Troubadour Theatre in Canary Wharf on October 20. It marks Mia’s official professional acting debut, and what a debut it is, playing the role made internationally famous by Jennifer Lawrence in the blockbuster film series.
Announcing the news, Mia said: “I am so excited and honoured to be playing Katniss. This is a dream-come-true role, and I cannot wait to see the production come to life. From being a huge fan of the films, I feel so lucky to be a part of the Hunger Games world, especially working with Mathew Dunster and an incredible creative team.”

The news has come as a surprise to many fans of both The Hunger Games and Carragher himself, who is best known for his impressive football career and more recently his punditry on Sky Sports. While Mia has kept a relatively low profile compared to her famous father, it’s clear she’s been quietly honing her craft and is ready to step into the spotlight.
Director Mathew Dunster, best known for his work on 2:22 – A Ghost Story, Hangmen, and The Pillowman, was full of praise for his new leading lady. “We searched far and wide, and comprehensively, for our Katniss,” he said. “From the moment Mia walked into the room, we knew she had the spirit, presence, and raw emotional power we needed. She’s going to bring a fresh energy to this role that will resonate with audiences of all ages.”
Set in the dystopian world of Panem, The Hunger Games tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a defiant young woman who becomes a symbol of rebellion and hope. The new stage version is based on the original novels by Suzanne Collins, rather than the films, promising a more grounded and intimate take on the now-iconic story.

The announcement has already sparked major buzz among theatre-goers and fans of the franchise, with many praising the bold casting decision. Theatres are expecting a surge in interest as ticket sales open for what promises to be one of the most talked-about West End events of the year.
As Mia Carragher prepares to step into the role of a lifetime, her father Jamie took to social media to show support, calling her “fearless, focused, and ready to fly.”
