Stevie Wonder: “I’ll Play Music for as Long as I Breathe”

Stevie Wonder has put an end to speculation that he may soon step away from performing live, declaring that he intends to play music for the rest of his life.

The legendary singer, songwriter, and pianist spoke candidly about his enduring love of performing on the BBC’s Sidetracked podcast with Annie MacManus, saying his passion for music remains as strong as ever.

At 74, the Motown icon remains one of the most beloved and influential figures in modern music, with a career spanning over six decades. But unlike some of his contemporaries who have recently announced farewell tours or stepped back from live performances, including Billy Joel and the Eagles, Stevie insists retirement simply isn’t on his radar.

“For as long as you breathe, for as long as your heart beats, there’s more for you to do,” he said. “I’m not gonna stop the gift that keeps pouring through my body.”

He explained his philosophy as an artist, saying: “I love doing what I’m doing. An artist never stops drawing. As long as you can imagine is as long as you are going to be creative.”

Known for timeless classics such as Superstition, Isn’t She Lovely, and I Just Called to Say I Love You, Wonder has spent more than 60 years inspiring audiences around the world. His work has earned him 25 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Though his health has occasionally been a concern in recent years, he underwent a kidney transplant in 2019, the singer showed no signs of slowing down during his last tours, delighting audiences with his signature energy and warmth.

His comments will come as a comfort to fans who feared his health might force him into retirement. Wonder’s unwavering commitment to his craft and to spreading joy through music is just one of the reasons he continues to be so admired by generations of listeners.

Fans have flooded social media with messages of support and gratitude. One wrote: “Stevie Wonder is a gift to this world. So glad to hear he’s still sharing his magic with us.” Another added: “We don’t deserve Stevie, but thank God we still have him.”

Stevie Wonder’s music and message remain as vital as ever: love, joy, and creativity have no expiration date.
