South Park’s New Season in Jeopardy Amid Studio Merger Chaos

The creators of South Park have hit out at Comedy Central after it emerged that season 27 of the long-running animated satire has been delayed yet again, leaving loyal fans frustrated.

New episodes of the Emmy-winning cartoon were originally expected to premiere on Comedy Central on July 9. But this week, the network confirmed that the return has now been pushed back two more weeks, to July 23.

In a rare public outburst, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone didn’t hold back their feelings about the situation. Responding to Comedy Central’s press release announcing the new air date, the duo posted a scathing statement to the show’s official X account:

“This merger is a shshow and it’s fking up South Park. We are the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.”

Their anger appears to stem from the $8 billion merger currently in motion between David Ellison’s Skydance Media and Paramount Global, which owns Comedy Central. The deal, which is expected to close on July 6, has already caused ripple effects across several Paramount properties, with programming schedules being shuffled as executives reorganise priorities.

For South Park fans, the delay comes as yet another blow. The show has aired just six episodes since 2022, as Parker and Stone juggled their landmark $900 million deal with Paramount, which included movies, specials, and other projects, alongside the main series. Many hoped season 27 would finally deliver a full run of classic South Park mayhem.

The backlash from viewers on social media was swift and vocal, with many venting their disappointment over having to wait even longer for new episodes. Some even expressed concern that the ongoing corporate wrangling could lead to further disruptions to the show’s future.

Having premiered back in 1997, South Park remains one of television’s longest-running animated series, known for its irreverent humour, quick-turnaround episodes, and unflinching satire of current events. But as one fan wryly put it on X: “Even Cartman would have lost patience by now.”

With the merger expected to complete in just a few days, all eyes are on how Parker and Stone, and their no-holds-barred creation, will navigate the corporate storm.
