Smokey Robinson Sued: Sexual Abuse Allegations Surface

Motown icon Smokey Robinson is facing a serious legal battle after four of his former female employees filed a civil lawsuit against him, accusing the legendary singer of sexual abuse and workplace misconduct. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, alleges that the 85-year-old musician subjected the women to ongoing sexual assault, harassment, and abuse during their time working as housekeepers for him and his wife, Frances Robinson.

The plaintiffs, identified in court documents as Jane Does 1 through 4 to protect their privacy, claim they suffered years of trauma while working in the Robinson household. According to the complaint, some of the alleged incidents occurred as recently as April 2024, highlighting the severity and longevity of the alleged misconduct.

The lawsuit further claims that Frances Robinson, Smokey’s wife, played a significant role in maintaining the toxic work environment. The women accuse her of enabling her husband’s behaviour by turning a blind eye to his actions. They also allege that Frances Robinson engaged in verbal abuse and made racist remarks, exacerbating the hostile atmosphere.

The plaintiffs are seeking at least $50 million (approximately £40 million) in damages, along with a jury trial to publicly address their grievances. Legal representatives for the women have stated that their clients are determined to hold both Smokey and Frances Robinson accountable for their alleged actions.

Smokey Robinson, best known as a pioneering figure in Motown’s success with hits like “Tears of a Clown” and “Tracks of My Tears,” has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit. His representatives have also remained silent on the matter, leaving fans of the music legend in shock.

The allegations have sparked significant public interest, with many expressing their disappointment and disbelief over the serious claims against one of the most revered figures in the music industry. The case also raises questions about the protection of domestic workers and the power dynamics that can leave them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

Legal experts following the case suggest that if the allegations are proven, the damages could be substantial, given the severity of the claims and the high-profile nature of the accused. For now, the world watches as a music icon’s reputation hangs in the balance amid a deeply troubling scandal.
