Silver Clef Awards: Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Rick Astley Honoured at Charity Gala

Music royalty descended on London last night as the O2 Silver Clef Awards honoured some of the biggest names in British music, while raising an impressive £715,000 for charity.

Held at the iconic Grosvenor House Hotel in central London, the star-studded bash benefits Nordoff and Robbins, the UK’s largest music therapy charity, which helps vulnerable people through the power of music.

The night’s big winners included Murder on the Dancefloor star Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who was named Best Female. Clearly delighted, Sophie charmed the audience with her acceptance speech: “I’ve actually got a shelf in my house where I put all my Best Female awards and this will take pride of place, and I promise it’s not just because it’s the first one I’ve ever won!”

Pop veteran Rick Astley picked up the Outstanding Achievement in Music award in recognition of his decades-long career and enduring popularity. The Never Gonna Give You Up singer was warmly applauded as he accepted the honour.

Other winners on the night included indie punk heroes Idles, who were crowned Best Live Act, and Irish favourites The Corrs, who also took home a coveted trophy.

A particularly moving moment came when Tony Christie, famed for his hit Is This the Way to Amarillo, collected the Icon Award at the age of 82. Reflecting on his long career, Tony quipped: “I’m 82 and singing as good as I ever was.”

The O2 Silver Clef Awards have been a staple of the UK music calendar since 1976, recognising outstanding talent while raising millions for Nordoff and Robbins over the years. This year’s total of £715,000 will help the charity continue its work delivering life-changing music therapy to children and adults living with serious illness, disability or isolation.

The glamorous event once again proved that music has the power not only to entertain, but also to heal and bring people together. Congratulations to all of this year’s deserving winners.
