Sam Fender has been forced to cancel several high-profile European shows this summer after being diagnosed with a haemorrhage on one of his vocal cords.
The Geordie singer-songwriter, 30, broke the news to fans on Instagram just hours after opening the British Grand Prix at Silverstone over the weekend.
Fender explained that earlier in the week he’d begun feeling some strain and swelling in his voice but had been cleared to perform at Silverstone following a few days of rest. However, during his performance at the iconic motor racing event, he realised “things were a lot harder than usual” and that he’d had to push himself vocally.
Subsequent medical checks confirmed the worst, he had suffered a haemorrhage on one of his vocal cords, forcing him to immediately cancel upcoming festival dates to prevent permanent damage.
In a heartfelt message to his fans, Sam wrote:
"I’ve been advised to be on vocal restriction and not sing for the next 14 days. If I were to play these next shows I would risk causing lasting damage to my vocal cords.”
The cancelled appearances include major European festivals such as Rock Werchter in Belgium, Down The Rabbit Hole in the Netherlands, NOS Alive in Portugal, and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
The news comes as a disappointment to his European fans, many of whom were eager to catch the star’s electrifying live shows that have earned him widespread acclaim. His Silverstone performance marked one of the summer’s big moments in British music, but it may now stand as his only appearance for a few weeks as he focuses on recovery.
Messages of support poured in from fans and fellow musicians alike, with many praising Sam for prioritising his long-term health over short-term appearances.
One fan commented: “Rest up, Sam! Your voice is too special to risk.” while another added: “Take care of yourself. We’ll all still be here when you’re back.”
For now, Sam is under doctor’s orders to remain on vocal rest for at least two weeks. Whether this affects further dates later this summer remains to be seen, but the star has reassured fans he will be back as soon as it’s safe to do so.
