In what’s shaping up to be one of the summer’s most talked-about celebrity feuds, Nicki Minaj and SZA exchanged barbs online this week, leaving fans divided and social media ablaze.
Late Tuesday night, Nicki Minaj set things off by accusing rapper Punch, who is signed to the same label as SZA, of “bullying me on Twitter for no reason.” Punch is known as the president of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), the powerhouse label behind SZA’s career.
That alone would have raised eyebrows among fans of both artists. But the tensions escalated when SZA weighed in with a cryptic post, tweeting:
“Mercury retrograde … don’t take the bait lol. Silly goose.”
While the message wasn’t a direct response to Nicki, it appeared to mock her accusations and dismiss the entire situation as astrological bad luck.
Nicki, never one to shy away from a fight, took that as provocation, unleashing a series of withering posts directed squarely at SZA.
She insulted SZA’s appearance and then delivered a stinging critique of her voice, writing on X:
“Does SZA think she’s more successful than me? SZA, if every song you’ve ever done vanished right now the music business wouldn’t even miss you. You sound like a ***ing dead dog.”
The phrase quickly went viral, with “dead dog” trending as thousands of fans debated whether Nicki had gone too far.
SZA keeps her cool
For her part, SZA refused to rise to the bait, instead responding with a calm, yet sharp, message of her own:
“I’m the most successful I ever been. GET SOME PERSPECTIVE n BARK AT THE WALL.”
Her understated clapback drew praise from fans who appreciated her refusal to stoop to Nicki’s level of vitriol.
Fans and industry react
The beef has sparked fierce debate within the hip-hop and R&B communities. Some fans defended Nicki, arguing that she has every right to defend herself against what she sees as bullying and disrespect from Punch and TDE. Others, however, criticised her for attacking SZA’s artistry and looks, saying her comments crossed the line.
Both women are at the peak of their respective careers: SZA’s latest album SOS has broken records and earned her a slew of award nominations, while Nicki continues to dominate charts with her latest release, Pink Friday 2.
