Ryan Gosling Heads to a Galaxy Far, Far Away in ‘Starfighter’

Star Wars fans, buckle up. Ryan Gosling is officially joining the iconic sci-fi universe in a brand-new film titled Star Wars: Starfighter, and according to both Gosling and director Shawn Levy, it’s set to take the saga in an exciting new direction.

Announced during this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, the project is being billed as “an entirely new adventure” with “all-new characters” and a setting that ventures into uncharted territory, a time period never before explored on screen. The film, which is scheduled for a cinematic release on May 28, 2027, promises a fresh story that will stand apart from the main Skywalker saga, neither prequel nor sequel, but something entirely its own.

Gosling, now 44, has had a long and varied Hollywood career since his early days on Disney Channel’s The All New Mickey Mouse Club. With global box office hits including The Notebook, La La Land, Blade Runner 2049 and Barbie, Gosling’s films have collectively earned over $2 billion worldwide, and now, he’s preparing to take on his most galactic role yet.

Speaking at the Tokyo event, the actor admitted the moment felt surreal: “Being here and seeing all of you makes it more inspiring to do it. There’s so much creativity and imagination in this room and there’s so much love. It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us.”

He added: “The force is a mysterious thing, but as I’m here, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’”

Gosling’s childhood obsession with Star Wars was also on full display, quite literally, when an image of his childhood bedroom, complete with Star Wars bedsheets, flashed onscreen during the reveal. “Naturally, my mum thought it might be something the fans would appreciate,” he joked. “But I suspect she just wants to justify years of hoarding.”

Starfighter will be helmed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, who has been developing the project with writer Jonathan Tropper since 2022. The duo has previously collaborated on The Adam Project and This Is Where I Leave You, and Levy says this latest venture will be their most ambitious yet.

“This isn’t a prequel, it’s not a sequel, it’s a new adventure,” Levy confirmed. “It’s a chance to expand what Star Wars can be, without the expectations that come with established characters.”

Gosling couldn’t agree more. “The script is just so good,” he said. “It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

With production set to begin this autumn and the film’s release locked in for 2027, fans may have to wait a while, but if the enthusiasm from its creators is anything to go by, Starfighter could be the beginning of a thrilling new era in the Star Wars galaxy.
