Roman Kemp has revealed that not all celebrities are as charming as they appear when the cameras aren’t rolling. The Capital FM host and TV personality opened up about attending a star-studded Halloween party hosted by Jonathan Ross, where his clever disguise allowed him to see some celebrities’ true colours.
Speaking on the Halloween episode of his You About? podcast with singer Tom Grennan, Roman explained that he chose to dress as Miss Trunchbull from Matilda, a terrifying character known for her strict and intimidating presence.
“Did you see me as Miss Trunchbull? Look at that. He had it in Koko in Camden. We went to Jonathan Ross’s party,” Roman said, recalling the event.
The disguise gave him a unique perspective on how some celebrities behave when they believe they are interacting with someone “lesser known” or outside their social circle.
“Do you know what I realised? If I’m me and I’ve met these people and they come onto The One Show and they’re really nice because they can see it’s you, you see who the real person is when you’re at a Halloween party,” he said.
Roman didn’t hold back when describing his experiences.
“There were a lot of celebrities that did not know it was me dressed as Miss Trunchbull and my interaction with them was far different to the one that I normally had,” he explained.
When Tom asked if this meant some stars were rude or dismissive, Roman replied bluntly:
“Yeah. And it took me saying…”
Tom interjected: “‘It’s Roman,’ and then they thought ‘Oh no’.”
To which Roman responded: “Yeah.”
Despite some chilly encounters, he emphasised that there were still plenty of lovely people at the party.
“The nicest person who I chatted with that night was Simon Pegg. Simon Pegg’s there, he’s with his kids and stuff like that, he’s dressed up,” Roman shared.
The story highlights a side of celebrity culture that fans rarely see. While many stars appear charming and approachable on television, Roman’s experience showed that behaviour can drastically change once the social hierarchy or recognition factor shifts.
Roman also shared that the Halloween party was a fun and extravagant affair, held at Koko in Camden, with everyone getting into the spirit of the evening with over-the-top costumes. His Miss Trunchbull outfit, complete with wig, imposing costume, and intimidating presence, helped him blend in while simultaneously observing the interactions of his fellow party-goers.
Reflecting on the experience, Roman said it was both amusing and enlightening.
“It’s weird, isn’t it? People are people, and it’s nice to see who actually has a bit of decency and who’s just acting for the cameras,” he added.
Fans and followers of Roman Kemp have been quick to relate, sharing stories of similar experiences where people’s true personalities came out when fame wasn’t a factor.
With Roman’s signature honesty and humour, this latest podcast episode offers an entertaining and revealing glimpse behind the glitz of celebrity life, showing that even stars aren’t immune to frosty interactions when their fame isn’t immediately obvious.
