RIP MANI: MUSIC WORLD MOURNS STONE ROSES LEGEND

The music world is in mourning following the death of Stone Roses bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield, who has passed away at the age of 63. The news was confirmed by his brother Greg, who shared the heartbreaking announcement on Facebook, writing: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother. Gary Mani Mounfield RIP.”

He later added in the comments, “Reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda,” referring to Mani’s late partner, who tragically died from cancer just two years ago. The couple had been married for over a decade, and those close to Mani say he never fully recovered from the loss.

Reports indicate that Mani died at his home in Heaton Moor, Stockport after collapsing unexpectedly following a seizure. Family sources said an ambulance was called immediately, but despite efforts to revive him, he sadly passed away at the scene. His sudden death has left fans, friends, and fellow musicians devastated, particularly given how active and upbeat he had recently been in interviews and public appearances.

Mani was best known for his work with The Stone Roses, the legendary Manchester band whose influence shaped the Madchester movement and inspired generations of musicians. His distinctive bass lines on tracks such as “I Wanna Be Adored”, “She Bangs the Drums”, and “Fools Gold” became defining elements of the band’s sound, fluid, rhythmic, and instantly recognisable.

Following news of his passing, The Stone Roses’ official X (formerly Twitter) account paid tribute with a classic throwback photo of Mani performing on stage, alongside the caption:
“RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for. X.”

Lead singer Ian Brown also shared a short but heartfelt message on his own page:
“Rest In Peace Mani.”

Fellow Manchester legend Liam Gallagher posted one of the earliest and most emotional tributes:
“IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO RIP RKID LG.”

Mani was not only a prominent figure in The Stone Roses but also an essential part of Primal Scream, joining the group in 1996 and contributing to some of their most acclaimed albums, including “XTRMNTR” and “Evil Heat”. His musical versatility and commitment to pushing creative boundaries earned him huge respect within the industry.

Despite being a giant of British rock, Mani was known for his warmth, humour, and generosity. Fellow musicians affectionately described him as someone who treated everyone as an equal, whether they were global rockstars or local pub performers. He was a passionate supporter of Manchester’s local music scene, frequently attending gigs and mentoring young artists.

His death marks the loss of one of the most influential and beloved bassists of the last four decades. Across social media, waves of tributes continue to pour in from fans sharing memories of gigs, festival moments, and the soundtrack of their youth, all shaped by Mani’s unmistakable sound.

As tributes continue, fans are celebrating not only his huge contribution to music but also his spirit, humour and kindness, qualities that made him a cherished figure both on and off the stage. Mani’s legacy will live on in the music that defined a movement and in the countless musicians he inspired.
