British singer-songwriter RAYE has addressed ongoing comparisons to the late Amy Winehouse, saying she feels honoured by the praise but insists she would “never, ever attempt to replace or imitate” the music icon.
The comments come as RAYE’s career continues to skyrocket following the release of her critically acclaimed debut album ‘My 21st Century Blues’. Her raw, soulful voice, emotional lyrics, and genre-blending style have drawn inevitable parallels to Winehouse, one of Britain’s most beloved and distinctive artists. But RAYE says the similarities stop there.
Speaking in a recent interview, the BRIT Award-winning star explained, “Amy was one of one. A true original. I have endless love and respect for her, and to even be mentioned in the same breath is overwhelming.”
“But I could never, ever attempt to replace or imitate her. That’s not what I’m here to do. I’m just trying to tell my truth, in my way.”
Winehouse, who passed away in 2011 at just 27 years old, remains a towering influence in British music thanks to her timeless album ‘Back to Black’ and unforgettable voice. Fans and critics have often highlighted the emotional depth and authenticity of RAYE’s music as reminiscent of Winehouse’s approach, particularly in tracks like “Escapism” and “Oscar Winning Tears.”
RAYE has also spoken about drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical figures, including Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone, and Frank Ocean, and has long been vocal about her desire to carve out her own unique path in the industry, particularly after going independent and breaking free from a major label deal.
“I’m not trying to follow in anyone’s footsteps,” she added. “I’m trying to create something new, something that represents me, flaws and all.”
With multiple awards already under her belt, sell-out shows, and increasing international acclaim, RAYE is well on her way to establishing her own legacy, no imitation required.
