One Direction fans are in for a major surprise, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson are set to “reunite” for a brand-new Netflix documentary series.
According to reports, filming has already begun on the multi-million-pound production, which will follow the two former bandmates on a road trip across the United States. Along the way, Zayn and Louis will share stories about their personal lives, open up about the highs and lows of fame, and reflect on unforgettable moments from their time in the world’s biggest boyband.
A decade since the split
The series, which is expected to launch in 2026, will mark ten years since One Direction’s official split. For millions of fans worldwide, the project represents the closest thing to a reunion since the group went their separate ways.
One Direction, made up of Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne, formed on The X Factor in 2010 and went on to dominate the global charts with hits like What Makes You Beautiful, Story of My Life, and Drag Me Down.
While Harry and Niall have pursued hugely successful solo careers, and Louis has carved out his own niche as a songwriter and performer, Zayn has largely stayed out of the limelight since leaving the band in 2015.
Honouring Liam Payne
Tragically, the documentary is also expected to cover the loss of their former bandmate Liam Payne, who died following a balcony fall in Buenos Aires in October 2024.
Insiders suggest that Zayn and Louis will openly reflect on Liam’s passing and how his loss has brought the band members closer again after years apart.
A source told The Sun:
“This will be an absolutely huge show for Netflix and is guaranteed to whip 1D’s global army of fans into a frenzy. It’s also likely to be a chance for some serious soul-searching and deep discussions about the incredible journey the group have already been on since they were formed on The X Factor 15 years ago.”
Netflix betting big on nostalgia
Netflix has invested heavily in music documentaries in recent years, and this project looks set to be one of its most high-profile releases yet. The streaming giant is reportedly banking on One Direction’s global fanbase, spanning multiple generations, to make the series a blockbuster success.
