OLIVIA RODRIGO: “I’M REALLY OBSESSED WITH FONTAINES D.C.”

Olivia Rodrigo has revealed her latest music obsession, and it’s not what fans were expecting.

In a recent interview, the 21-year-old Grammy-winning singer and Guts hitmaker said she’s become “really obsessed” with Irish post-punk rock band Fontaines D.C., calling them one of her biggest inspirations right now.

“I’ve been listening to a lot of Fontaines D.C. lately,” Olivia said. “They’re just incredible. I love how raw and poetic their sound is. I’m really obsessed with them.”

The chart-topping singer, best known for emotional pop anthems like drivers license, vampire and good 4 u, has always shown a wide range of musical influences, but her love for the Mercury Prize-nominated Dublin group marks a surprising new twist in her evolving taste.

Fontaines D.C., who rose to fame with their 2019 debut album Dogrel, are known for their gritty, poetic lyrics and thunderous, guitar-heavy sound, a stark contrast to Olivia’s polished pop production. But the connection between them may not be so far-fetched. Both acts are celebrated for their lyrical honesty and youthful intensity, making them natural kindred spirits across genres.

Fans have welcomed Olivia’s musical crossover with open arms. “Olivia Rodrigo stanning Fontaines D.C. is the indie/pop alliance I didn’t know I needed,” one fan tweeted. Another wrote: “Imagine a collab. Grian Chatten x Olivia Rodrigo? TAKE MY MONEY.”

Rodrigo’s praise also comes at a time when Fontaines D.C. are gaining international momentum, especially ahead of their much-anticipated 2025 album release. A co-sign from one of Gen Z’s biggest stars could introduce the band to a whole new wave of listeners.

This isn’t the first time Olivia has worn her influences on her sleeve. In previous interviews, she’s named Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette, No Doubt and The Cure as major inspirations. Her growing love of alternative and punk-leaning artists continues to shape her sound, and possibly hints at where her music is heading next.

For now, it seems Olivia is happily lost in the poetic chaos of Fontaines D.C., and it’s a vibe fans can totally get behind.
