Jimmy Fallon has once again relived what he calls “the most embarrassing thing” that’s ever happened to him, the time he unknowingly blew a chance at dating Nicole Kidman... by playing Mario Kart.
The awkward and now-legendary story resurfaced thanks to a 2015 clip from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where Nicole Kidman surprised the late-night host, and the world, by revealing that what Jimmy thought was a casual meeting might actually have been a potential date.
“I liked you,” Kidman told a stunned Fallon during the interview.
“So our mutual friend says, ‘Jimmy wants to meet you, go over to his apartment.’ I was single, so I thought, sure!”
Jimmy, looking genuinely shocked and horrified, admitted that he had no idea it was a date, believing instead that the Oscar winner was stopping by for a chemistry read for her 2005 rom-com Bewitched.
“Did I date Nicole Kidman?!” he exclaimed, trying to process what he had missed out on.
Nicole’s memory of the encounter, however, painted a picture of one of the most awkward meetups in celebrity dating history.
“You were in a baseball cap… you wouldn’t talk. Then you put a video game on, it was so bad,” she laughed.
“About an hour and a half in, I figured you had no interest and left. It was so embarrassing.”
That video game? Mario Kart.
Fallon confessed that he spent the visit playing the Nintendo classic, completely unaware that the Hollywood star sitting beside him was hoping for some romantic chemistry, not Rainbow Road.
The cringeworthy confession quickly went viral and remains one of the most watched and beloved segments from The Tonight Show, racking up over 63 million views on YouTube.

Fallon later admitted the moment haunts him:
“It’s honestly the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Fans have long joked that Jimmy “fumbled the bag” in the most spectacular way possible, and Kidman’s good-humoured recollection only makes the missed connection more legendary.
Nicole, of course, went on to marry Keith Urban in 2006, while Fallon has been married to producer Nancy Juvonen since 2007.
But still, one can’t help but wonder what might’ve been… if not for Mario Kart.
