TV presenter, musician, and broadcaster Myleene Klass became an unexpected hero at Brighton Pride over the weekend when she helped save a man’s life during the Sugababes’ headline performance at Preston Park.
Klass, 46, was volunteering with St John Ambulance when a festival-goer became critically ill in the crowd. As part of a first response unit, she was asked to carry out a jaw thrust manoeuvre, a vital technique used to open a patient’s airway in emergency situations.
Recalling the dramatic moment on Instagram, Myleene said:
“You can probably hear the Sugababes are on in the background and I’ve just helped save a life. It was honestly awe-inspiring seeing how St John Ambulance operated. We have doctors and paramedics. Everyone is here. Everyone just did their bit.”
She continued:
“I cannot divulge what happened with the patient or what the circumstances are, but what I can say is I am utterly blown away, and just to have been a small part of it as well. I actually just had to do the procedure that is known as a jaw thrust, that gives you an indication as to how serious the scenario was. The patient is on their way to hospital right now.”
The jaw thrust technique is a well-known but often challenging first-aid skill, typically used when a person is unconscious but still breathing, to prevent the tongue from blocking the airway. It’s a manoeuvre that can make the difference between life and death.
The patient’s current condition has not been disclosed, but St John Ambulance confirmed that immediate medical assistance was essential at the scene.
Klass’s involvement is far from a coincidence. In 2024, she became St John Ambulance’s first celebrity ambassador, but her connection with the charity dates back several years, she has been working alongside the organisation since 2021, using her public platform to encourage more people to learn first aid.
She has previously spoken about the importance of these life-saving skills, explaining that “first aid is something everyone should know” and that you never know when you might need it.
This isn’t the first time Myleene has taken her ambassador role into the field. She has often joined first aid teams at large events to witness and assist in real emergency scenarios. However, Brighton Pride proved to be one of the most dramatic examples yet of how crucial those skills can be.
Brighton Pride, known as one of the UK’s biggest and most colourful celebrations of LGBTQ+ pride, attracted thousands of attendees this year. With large crowds, live music, and summer heat, medical teams were on high alert for any incidents. Thanks to the swift response of St John Ambulance, and Klass’s quick thinking, one man’s life may well have been saved.
As for Myleene, she signed off her Instagram story with a simple but powerful reminder:
“Learn first aid. You never know when you’ll need it, and one day, it might save someone’s life.”
