Minecraft Movie Smashes Expectations with $301 Million Global Opening Weekend

In a result that’s taken Hollywood by surprise, the Minecraft Movie has mined its way to box office gold, raking in a staggering $301 million globally in its opening weekend.

The live-action adaptation of the beloved video game features a star-studded cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge. Despite mixed critical reception, the film found massive success with audiences, thanks in large part to the global fanbase built by the iconic block-building game.

Domestically, moviegoers in the US contributed $157 million to the total, while international audiences added a further $144 million, proving that the Minecraft phenomenon is still going strong more than a decade after the game's release.

Since its launch in 2011, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies worldwide and become a household name for players of all ages. Its appeal lies in its boundless creativity, allowing users to craft their own worlds, structures, and adventures from the ground up, something the film aimed to bring to life on the big screen.

The movie follows the chaotic journey of Garrett, played by Momoa, and features plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour and slapstick moments. One standout scene that’s already gone viral sees Momoa’s character in a hilarious showdown with a baby zombie riding a chicken, perfectly capturing the quirky spirit of the source material.

While critics weren’t entirely sold, Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the film at just 48%, audiences have responded much more positively, with an 87% approval rating. Many praised the film’s energy, nostalgic nods, and family-friendly adventure, even if the plot took a backseat to spectacle.

With such a blockbuster debut and strong word-of-mouth from fans, Minecraft looks set to become one of the surprise box office hits of the year. And given the success of other video game adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog, it’s safe to say this won’t be the last time we see the pixelated world of Minecraft brought to life on screen.
