After years of speculation and swirling rumours, it’s official, Sir Mick Jagger and longtime partner Melanie Hamrick are engaged. The news comes straight from the source, as the 37-year-old former ballerina confirmed their engagement during a recent interview with Paris Match. But don’t expect a lavish rock ‘n’ roll wedding just yet.
The 81-year-old Rolling Stones frontman, an icon whose swagger has defined generations, first met Melanie more than a decade ago while they were both on tour in Japan. Their relationship blossomed quietly behind the scenes, culminating in the birth of their son, Devereaux Octavian Basil Jagger, in 2016.
While the couple has remained relatively private about their romance, Melanie finally shared that Mick popped the question a few years back. “We’ve been engaged two or three years,” she revealed, noting that although they are committed to one another, marriage isn’t currently on the cards. “Maybe one day we’ll marry, maybe not. We are so happy in our current life that I would be too afraid to change anything.”
Their bond, she explained, is built on something more enduring than a ceremony, support and happiness. “We try to support each other, be there for each other, and make sure everyone is happy. That’s all that matters to me and all I strive for.”
Fans may remember whispers of an engagement first sparked back in 2023 when Melanie was spotted wearing a dazzling diamond ring on that finger. When asked about it at the time, she cheekily told PEOPLE, “Did Mick give me the ring? Yes. Is it for that finger? Yes… In my mind, it’s a promise ring. We’ll be immature and call it a promise ring.”
Despite the playfulness, a source later revealed that Melanie had been telling friends during a trip to the American Ballet Theatre in New York that she was indeed engaged to the music legend, and that her family was overjoyed.
For Sir Mick, Devereaux is the youngest of his eight children. His first, Karis, was born in 1970 with singer Marsha Hunt. He later married Bianca Jagger and welcomed daughter Jade, before his famously long relationship with model Jerry Hall, which brought four more children. His seventh, Lucas, was the result of an affair with model Luciana Gimenez, a revelation that ended his relationship with Hall in 1999. He was later linked to fashion designer L’Wren Scott until her death in 2014.
While Mick Jagger may be rock’s eternal wild child, it seems even he has found harmony in love, just don’t expect a wedding playlist any time soon.
