The beloved public figure made the candid admission during an appearance on The Jay Shetty Podcast, where she discussed her journey into her 60s, the challenges of being an “empty nester,” and the importance of mental health.
“At this phase of my life, I'm in therapy right now because I'm transitioning, you know?” Michelle shared. “I'm 60 years old; I've finished a really hard thing in my life with my family intact, I'm an empty nester, my girls have been launched.” The former First Lady explained that therapy has given her a safe space to explore her thoughts and feelings with “other voices” and a “new person that's getting to know me.”
Michelle Obama has always been an advocate for mental health and self-care, and her decision to speak openly about seeking therapy has been met with widespread support from fans and followers. For many, her honesty has served as a reminder that even those who appear to have it all together can benefit from professional guidance during life’s transitions.
In the interview, she also took the opportunity to address long-running rumours about her marriage to former President Barack Obama, assuring listeners that the couple is not divorcing. Instead, she emphasized that they are both embracing this new chapter of their lives with a sense of independence and personal growth.
Michelle described how stepping out of the public eye and leaving behind the demanding responsibilities of the White House has given her a newfound sense of freedom. “Every choice that I'm making is completely mine. I now don't have the excuse of, ‘Well, my kids need this’ or ‘My husband needs that’ or ‘The country needs that,’” she explained.
The best-selling author and former First Lady has previously spoken about the importance of mental well-being, particularly in her memoir Becoming, where she detailed her personal struggles and triumphs.
