Tom Fletcher, singer and guitarist for McFly, had an unexpected trip to A&E this week after a sudden flare-up of his rare eye condition left him looking like he had been "smashed in the face."
The musician suffers from uveitis, a condition that causes inflammation inside the eye and requires urgent treatment to prevent serious complications, including vision loss and blindness. Symptoms can range from pain and blurred vision to light sensitivity, making prompt medical attention essential.
Sharing his experience on Instagram, Tom posted a selfie on his Story revealing noticeable swelling and drooping on the left side of his face. “Not the day I had planned. Uveitis sucks! My autoimmune thing flared up out of nowhere last night,” he wrote. “Woke up feeling (and looking) like I'd been smashed in the face! This is after it had calmed down and I could see again.”
The 38-year-old, who lives in Richmond, London, with his wife, author and actress Giovanna Fletcher, and their three sons, sought treatment at The Western Eye Hospital in central London. Despite his frustration at another hospital visit, he expressed gratitude for the medical staff who have helped him manage his condition over the years. “Hate having to come here but so thankful it exists! The doctors and nurses have helped me out so many times now,” he added.
Tom has previously opened up about living with uveitis, highlighting the importance of awareness and early intervention. Fans have flooded his social media with well-wishes, hoping for a swift recovery as he continues to manage the condition.
