Matt Lucas Reveals Coronation Street Snub After Pitching His Dream Role as ‘Teddy Pink’

Matt Lucas has revealed he once pitched himself to join the cast of Coronation Street, only to be rejected by the long-running soap’s bosses.

The much-loved comedian, actor and writer, who rose to fame as George Dawes on Shooting Stars and went on to co-create Little Britain, confessed his decades-long desire to appear on the cobbles during a chat with David Walliams on their new Making A Scene podcast.

The 50-year-old said he approached the Corrie team years ago with his idea for a character called Teddy Pink, but despite his fame and popularity, the producers weren’t interested.

“I would like to be in Coronation Street because I feel like that's the sort of funniest of the soaps,” Matt explained. “And I've always wanted to be, and I told the people of Corrie this years ago, they didn’t bite, someone that goes into the hairdresser and sits down and has a haircut, even though I have no hair.”

Matt, who famously sports a shaved head, added that his only condition was the character’s name: “And I’ve always wanted to be called Teddy Pink. And I said, ‘I’ll be in Coronation Street as long as I’m called Teddy Pink.’”

While Coronation Street is known for its mix of gritty storylines and eccentric characters, it seems Matt’s idea was a step too far for the ITV soap. However, fans online were quick to express disappointment that the comedian’s dream cameo never came to fruition, calling it a “missed opportunity” for a memorable moment.

Lucas, who has also appeared in Doctor Who, Les Misérables, Bridesmaids and Great British Bake Off, remains one of Britain’s most recognisable comic talents. And while Corrie might not have room for Teddy Pink, Matt’s career shows no sign of slowing down, with further writing and acting projects in the pipeline.

Perhaps someday the residents of Weatherfield will finally meet Teddy Pink, even if just for a quick trim at Audrey’s Salon.
