Marge Simpson Isn’t Dead! Producer Shuts Down Rumours After Season 36 Finale

The rumour mill has been working overtime in Springfield, but fans of The Simpsons can finally exhale, Marge Simpson is not dead.

After The Simpsons aired its 36th season finale, eagle-eyed viewers and social media sleuths started speculating that the beloved blue-haired mom had been quietly killed off. A recent episode, set in a speculative future, showed a world in which Marge was no longer alive, sending shockwaves through the fandom.

But executive producer Matt Selman has stepped in to set the record straight. In a recent interview with Variety, he debunked the growing theory that Marge had been written out of the show permanently.

“There is no canon, The Simpsons doesn’t even have canon!” Selman declared. “Obviously, since The Simpsons future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time. Marge will probably never be dead ever again.”

The confusion appears to have stemmed from a "future-set" episode that aired around six weeks ago, which imagined life without Marge. These types of episodes are common in The Simpsons universe, often jumping forward decades with humorous and wildly different takes on how life has changed for the iconic family. However, they are never meant to be taken as official timelines.

Selman emphasised the show’s flexible narrative style, which has allowed The Simpsons to explore a multitude of realities, from apocalyptic futures to sci-fi dreamscapes. “The freeform nature of the show, which began as skits on The Tracey Ullman Show back in the late ’80s, allows us to tell stories outside of traditional continuity,” he said.

Fans have been reacting to the news with relief. “I knew she couldn’t be gone for good!” posted one user on X (formerly Twitter), while another joked, “You can’t kill Marge, she’s survived Homer for 36 seasons!”

As The Simpsons heads into its historic 37th season, one thing is clear: no matter what strange futures the writers cook up, Marge Simpson remains the heart of the series, alive, well, and probably cooking pork chops for dinner.
