A man has been arrested in Tenerife on suspicion of killing his mother following a violent family row at their home in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on Wednesday night.
The 40-year-old, who has a history of psychiatric illness, allegedly attacked his 66-year-old mother with a knife.
The incident happened around 10:00pm inside their home on Calle Los Guanches in the Barrio Nuevo area. Police say the suspect fled the scene but was spotted by neighbours, who quickly raised the alarm.
Officers from the National Police and the La Laguna Local Police tracked him down and made the arrest just 30 metres from the property shortly before 11.30pm.
Paramedics were dispatched to the house, but were unable to save the woman, who had suffered multiple stab wounds and was declared dead from her injuries.
The property remains sealed off as forensic teams carry out their investigation, and the suspect has been taken to a psychiatric unit under police supervision.
