Michelle Obama has always kept it real, but her latest revelation has left fans stunned.
In a candid new podcast appearance, the former First Lady admitted she hates being called “Mrs. Obama”, and she made it very clear she prefers “Michelle.”
Appearing on the hit podcast Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, Michelle was joined by her brother Craig Robinson when the surprising moment occurred.
Matt kicked things off by revealing an awkward interaction just before the recording began:
“Earlier I was like, ‘Thank you so much, Mrs. Obama,’ and you said, ‘Michelle.’”
Michelle laughed and confirmed it was true:
“We cannot have a real conversation if you’re saying ‘Mrs. Obama.’ That’s too many syllables!”
She went on to explain that she’s always been conscious of the image that comes with the former First Lady title, and has worked hard to “appear less intimidating.”
“I was trying to do that when I was First Lady because I just think... I am not that position. I am Michelle.”
While her honesty has won praise from many fans, others see the comments as further evidence of something deeper going on, especially with ongoing rumours that her marriage to Barack Obama is under strain. Speculation about their relationship has grown in recent months as the former President and First Lady appear to be spending more time apart.
The podcast clip has since gone viral, with debates raging online over respect, titles, and how much personality public figures are allowed to show.
Whatever the deeper meaning, one thing’s clear, Michelle Obama is done with being boxed into a title.
