Two of Australia’s biggest icons have been sharing the love, but Margot Robbie won’t be stepping into Kylie Minogue’s shoes on the big screen anytime soon.
The Barbie actress has revealed she turned down the chance to play the I Should Be So Lucky singer in a potential biopic of Kylie’s life, saying she wouldn’t be able to do her justice because of her singing voice.
Reacting to the news that Kylie had named her as her dream choice for the role, Margot said:
“That is wild information. I am beyond honoured. Of course I could not do it. I can’t sing like Kylie. I don’t like it when people can’t actually sing and do a singing movie, you know?”

Kylie herself first floated the idea back in 2023 during an interview, saying:
“Margot Robbie, in my dreams. She’d have the Australian accent down, that’s for sure.”
Margot revealed that the two finally met not to talk shop, but simply to enjoy each other’s company.
“I got a call from my team like, ‘Kylie Minogue would like to meet up with you,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is the best day of my life,’” Margot recalled.
She explained that she assumed Kylie wanted to discuss a work project or a charity collaboration, but it turned out to be something much more casual, and very Australian.
“So I get to the Chateau Marmont, a place in LA, and she sat down, the coolest, warmest, most divine creature you’ve ever met. She was just like, ‘I just thought, you’re an Aussie, I’m an Aussie, and we’ve never met. I thought we should probably hang out and get cocktails’. There was no work conversation whatsoever, we just got drunk together.”

The meeting may not have led to a professional collaboration, but it did solidify the friendship between two of Australia’s most recognisable exports.
For fans, the thought of Margot Robbie taking on the role of Kylie Minogue will remain a tantalising “what if.” The Padam Padam singer has been enjoying a career renaissance in recent years, with her latest music earning critical acclaim and bringing her to a whole new generation of fans. A biopic of her extraordinary career, from Neighbours to global pop stardom, seems almost inevitable.
Whether or not Margot ever reconsiders, her comments have sparked conversation online about who could possibly do justice to Kylie’s incredible life and career.
