The Lionesses have revealed the little luxuries that keep them feeling at home during their campaign at the UEFA Women’s Euros.
From Yorkshire teabags to Lego models, candles, dressing gowns and board games, the England squad is making sure they have all the creature comforts they need while away from home in Switzerland.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, star striker Alessia Russo said she couldn’t travel without her favourite candle and her soft dressing gown. “There’s a few things I’m going to take, a candle, because I’m really into my candles at the moment, just to have it in the room with me to make it homely,” she explained. “I’ll also take Yorkshire teabags, and if I’ve got the room in my case I’d like to take my dressing gown too.”
She added: “For me, my ideal evening is having a full shower, a real deep cleanse, then getting in a fresh pair of pyjamas, sat on the sofa with a cup of tea and a film or series on. That’s the best.”
Fellow forward Lauren Hemp agreed, saying her tea habit would be hard to shake. “I love a cup of tea, I have about three or four a day,” she admitted. Hemp is also known for her love of Lego, although she admitted she’s planning to pack a little lighter this time after struggling to protect her models on the long flight home from the 2023 World Cup. “I did about four or five, models, last time and trying to keep them safe on a 20-hour plane journey wasn’t fun. This time I’m going for something smaller so I don’t have to worry so much.”
For midfielder Ella Toone, who recently opened up about bringing a pillow with her late dad’s photo on it, her priority off the pitch is keeping up the team’s board game nights. “We don’t ever forget to take Partners, the board game, I don’t know what we’d do if we didn’t have that,” she said. “One game lasts 40 minutes so it kills a lot of time.” Russo added: “And Monopoly Deal… it’s so good.”
The squad’s downtime has become a hallmark of their close bond, with the players also famously crowding around laptops to catch up on Love Island during the last World Cup.
With their mix of competitive spirit and home comforts, the Lionesses look set to feel right at home, wherever they’re playing.
