Larry Lamb to Step Back from Acting After Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special

Larry Lamb, the much-loved actor best known for his role as Mick Shipman in Gavin & Stacey, has revealed that the recent Christmas special of the sitcom is likely to be his final television role. After decades of a celebrated career, Lamb is stepping back from acting to focus on his new passion: writing.

In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, Larry opened up about his decision to wind down his TV career. The actor, now in his 70s, expressed his joy at finishing his journey with Gavin & Stacey, a show that has won the hearts of millions and whose Christmas special was watched by an astonishing 19 million viewers.

“You get so involved with these characters that they become your favourite at that time, they are the focus of your life,” Larry said. “But to finish up in my 70s playing a character like Mick, who is beloved by millions of people, you have to give the writers credit. At this stage in my career, Mick is the closest to my heart.”

Larry’s portrayal of Mick Shipman, the warm-hearted and sometimes awkward dad in the iconic British sitcom, brought him widespread acclaim and a special place in TV history. Though Lamb has played many memorable characters throughout his career, including the villainous Archie Mitchell in EastEnders, it is Gavin & Stacey that has given him the greatest joy and recognition.

Despite stepping away from the screen, Larry isn’t fully closing the door on acting. He hinted that he might consider taking on small stage roles “to keep my face in” but is happy to pass the baton of bigger roles to newer generations of actors.

Alongside acting, Larry is now focusing on a different creative venture: writing a novel about the entertainment industry. The book is said to draw from his extensive experience in show business, promising a unique insider perspective.

The announcement of Lamb’s retirement from TV acting marks the end of an era for many fans who have grown up watching him bring characters to life with warmth and authenticity. The Gavin & Stacey Christmas special served as the perfect send-off, a nostalgic and heartwarming conclusion to a much-loved show and an acting career that has spanned decades.

Fans and colleagues alike have praised Larry for his contribution to British television, with many taking to social media to share their appreciation and good wishes.

As Larry Lamb moves into this new chapter of his life, his legacy as Mick Shipman and other unforgettable roles will continue to entertain audiences for years to come.
