LEWIS CAPALDI: CELEBS “LIED” ABOUT CHECKING IN WITH HIM

Lewis Capaldi has revealed that not every celebrity was truthful when they claimed to check in on him during his time away from the spotlight.

The Scottish singer-songwriter, 27, stepped back from music after his emotional and highly publicised breakdown on stage at Glastonbury in 2023, when his Tourette’s symptoms overwhelmed him mid-performance. It was a heartbreaking moment that left him unable to continue and prompted him to take a hiatus to focus on his physical and mental health.

Now, after almost two years of rest and recovery, Capaldi has spoken candidly about which famous friends actually reached out to him, and who simply said they did. He explained that while there were genuine moments of kindness from some, others were not as honest about their support. “Niall obviously,” he said. “We’re in a group chat so I speak to him quite a lot. But some people said they checked in on me but did not. I can’t name and shame, but it was bizarre… really weird.”

One of the most surprising and touching gestures came from Sir Elton John, who personally phoned him the day after his difficult Glastonbury moment. Capaldi admitted he had no idea how Elton had even obtained his number but was deeply moved that the music legend took the time to call. “The day after Glastonbury, Elton phoned and said it was wise to take a break. I knew he had my email but I didn’t know he had my number, so he must have got it from management or something.” The call from Elton, paired with ongoing encouragement from Niall Horan, proved to be among the most meaningful lifelines during that difficult period.

For Capaldi, what made things harder to understand was the behaviour of others who publicly claimed to have checked in on him when they had not. “It’s strange when people say something publicly that just isn’t true. I don’t understand why, maybe to look good? But it didn’t happen.” His comments shed light on the sometimes-artificial nature of celebrity friendships, where public statements don’t always reflect private realities.

After stepping back from the industry and its pressures, Capaldi has now made a triumphant return to the stage. His comeback performance at Glastonbury this summer was emotional and powerful, with fans visibly moved to see him reclaim the very same stage that had once symbolised such a low point. It was a moment of resilience and renewal that underlined just how far he has come in his personal journey.

Capaldi has also revealed that his health is in a far stronger place today. “I’m doing much better now,” he said. “I’m not taking Sertraline anymore, and I feel like I’ve got a better handle on things.” His honesty about living with Tourette’s and his openness about mental health challenges have earned him huge respect from fans worldwide. For many, his willingness to be vulnerable makes him not only a talented performer but also an inspiring figure who proves that even in the harsh world of fame, authenticity matters.

Lewis Capaldi’s story is one of hardship, resilience, and ultimately, hope. While not every celebrity lived up to their words, those who did –,like Elton John and Niall Horan, made all the difference. And now, as he steps back into the limelight stronger than ever, it seems clear that Capaldi’s greatest strength lies not just in his voice, but in his courage to be real.
