KATHERINE RYAN ADMITS SHE “HASN’T SLEPT IN FOUR YEARS” DUE TO CO-SLEEPING ROUTINE

Katherine Ryan has revealed she “hasn’t slept in four years” after opening up about her unusual, and often divisive, co-sleeping routine with her children.

The comedian and actress, 41, who is currently pregnant with her fourth child, made the candid confession on the Nearly Parents podcast, hosted by Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo, as the couple prepare for their own journey into parenthood.

Ryan explained that she, her partner Bobby Kootstra, and their two youngest children, aged two and four, all share the same sleeping space. Rather than separating into individual bedrooms, the family have opted for a nursery-style setup where everyone beds down together.

“It really tests your relationship,” Ryan admitted. “You used to be the most important person in each other’s lives, but when you have kids, you cease to be the most important person in each other’s lives. There’s a shift in roles, responsibilities, and focus.”

The Taskmaster star, known for her sharp wit and honesty, went on to describe the physical and emotional toll of years of broken sleep. “You’re both tired and you’re hungry and you’re sleep deprived, that’s how they torture prisoners,” she joked. “I haven’t slept in four years, but I’m kind of fine with it.”

Ryan even compared her current sleep pattern to that of an elderly relative. “I’m getting to the age where, you know, your dad starts waking up at 5am and he’s in bed by 7pm, that’s me,” she said with a laugh. “The elderly get up early and that’s the phase of life I’m at. I don’t view myself as the children’s mother, I’m their grandma. I’m really fun, I always say yes.”

The stand-up comic, who has spoken in the past about balancing her demanding career with motherhood, has often used her family life as material for her stage routines. Her frank and humorous take on parenthood resonates strongly with audiences who see a refreshing honesty in her willingness to discuss the challenges that many parents face behind closed doors.

Co-sleeping, while not uncommon, remains a controversial topic among parents and health professionals. Advocates say it can foster closeness and security, while critics highlight potential sleep quality issues and safety risks. Ryan’s revelation has sparked conversation online, with many parents admitting they too have shared similar arrangements, either out of choice or necessity.

For Ryan, however, the unconventional routine seems to work, even if it leaves her exhausted. With another baby on the way, it looks like uninterrupted nights are still some distance away. But in typical Katherine Ryan fashion, she appears to be embracing the chaos with humour and a dose of self-awareness.
