John Cleese Took LSD at 65, “It Blew My Mind!”

Comedy legend John Cleese has made a startling revelation, he experimented with LSD at the age of 65 in a bid to better understand the mind and human perception.

The Fawlty Towers star, now 84, opened up in an interview with The Times, admitting that although he had no interest in drugs during his youth, his curiosity eventually led him to try the powerful psychedelic substance lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) back in 2005. At the time, the experience was carried out in a supervised setting with one of the world’s leading experts on psychedelics, Cleese said, ensuring it was done in a safe and controlled environment.

“I just wanted to know what it was all about,” Cleese told the paper. “The man was one of the world experts on it so I felt perfectly safe.”

He described the effects of the trip as mind-expanding and extraordinary, although not without a brief moment of fear. “I got scared for about 10 minutes in the middle,” he admitted. “But he and his wife saw me through that, and it was extraordinary to realise how fertile the human mind is.”

LSD, which is known for its intense hallucinogenic effects, alters perception, distorts reality, and is often associated with vivid sensory experiences. Once a central substance in 1960s counterculture, it has seen renewed interest in recent years due to studies suggesting potential therapeutic benefits in treating depression, PTSD, and addiction, especially when used in medically supervised settings.

Cleese, best known for his roles in Monty Python and the creation of the iconic sitcom Fawlty Towers, has always been open about his intellectual curiosity and philosophical leanings. This revelation adds yet another layer to his famously inquisitive personality, with many fans now praising his willingness to explore the complexities of the mind, even later in life.

The comedian has previously spoken on topics ranging from psychology to spirituality, and his LSD experience seems to align with a broader personal journey to better understand consciousness and creativity.

While the revelation has raised eyebrows, particularly given his status as a beloved national treasure, many on social media have applauded his honesty, and marvelled at the idea of a 65-year-old Basil Fawlty venturing into psychedelic territory.

Whether seen as a late-life experiment or a genuine search for meaning, Cleese’s trip down the rabbit hole is proof that curiosity doesn’t fade with age.
