JENNIFER SAUNDERS LAUNCHES MISSION TO HELP THE PLANET WITH INSPIRING NEW AUDIOBOOK

Comedy legend Jennifer Saunders is putting her voice to a new cause, and it’s one that’s very close to her heart.

The Absolutely Fabulous and French & Saunders star has narrated a brand-new audiobook that’s inspiring children to reduce their plastic use and learn more about protecting the planet.

Saunders, 67, revealed earlier this year on her popular podcast French & Saunders: Titting About that one of her personal goals for 2025 was to “do more for the planet.” It seems she’s wasted no time making that happen.

When first-time British author Bertie Stephens heard Jennifer’s pledge, he reached out to her with an idea , and she immediately said yes. Stephens asked whether she would narrate the audiobook version of his acclaimed debut novel, Ellie Ment and the Material Matter, which blends science, fantasy, and environmental education to captivate young readers.

The print version of the book, released in June, has already become an unexpected hit on both sides of the Atlantic, topping Amazon’s bestseller charts in the 9–14 age category. The audiobook, featuring Saunders’ unmistakable voice, was officially released on October 14th, and has been praised as a vital tool for getting children engaged in topics like sustainability and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).

Jennifer said: “I loved Ellie from page one. She’s curious, brave, and full of heart, exactly the sort of character young people should be reading about. I think this story is a wonderful way to show how every small action can make a big difference to our planet.”

The story follows Ellie Ment, a bright but restless schoolgirl who discovers a way to communicate with the materials around her, from metals and fabrics to plastic itself. As Ellie learns more about how materials are made, used, and discarded, she embarks on a magical journey to help save her community from the damage caused by pollution and waste.

Author Bertie Stephens said he was “over the moon” that Saunders agreed to take part:

“Jennifer Saunders has such a unique voice and incredible energy. I can’t think of anyone better to bring Ellie’s story to life. When she said yes, it felt like the project had come full circle.”

The audiobook has already received glowing early reviews from parents, teachers, and eco-campaigners. Many have praised it for turning complex environmental issues into a fun and accessible story for children, with Saunders’ lively narration adding charm and humour throughout.

The project also marks another step in Jennifer’s continued efforts to use her platform for positive change. In recent years, she’s supported campaigns for cleaner oceans, wildlife protection, and women in science, and has spoken openly about wanting to inspire younger generations to care about the environment.

Fans of Saunders have also noted how her trademark wit shines through in the audiobook. One reviewer on Audible commented:

“Jennifer Saunders makes you feel like you’re right there in the middle of Ellie’s world. It’s funny, smart, and meaningful, and the perfect listen for families who want something with a message.”

With Ellie Ment and the Material Matter continuing to rise in popularity, Saunders’ latest project proves that laughter, storytelling, and a bit of heart can go a long way in changing the way people think about the planet.

For Jennifer, it’s not just another role, it’s a mission. And this time, it’s to make the world a better place for the next generation.
