James Blunt has shared a deeply personal and emotional story about his relationship with the late Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher, revealing the true reason he asked her to become his son’s godmother.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the You're Beautiful singer opened up about his unique bond with Fisher, which began in the early 2000s when he was recording his breakthrough album Back to Bedlam. During that time, Blunt lived with the Hollywood legend at her Los Angeles home, sparking a lifelong friendship filled with love, laughter, and ultimately, loss.
“I told her everything,” Blunt said. “I told her when I met my wife, we chose engagement rings together. She’s godmother to my child. I was with her the day before she died, and it was very, very sad.”
Blunt and his wife, Sofia Wellesley, share two sons, and when their first child was born, the singer chose Fisher to be the godmother. But the gesture was more than just a tribute to their close relationship, it was also a plea.
“What was saddest, I suppose,” he confessed, “is how I asked her to be godmother to my child, saying, ‘I’m asking you to do this in the hope that you’ll look after yourself a little bit better.’ And she didn’t, really.”
Fisher, beloved worldwide as Princess Leia and admired for her fearless honesty about mental health and addiction, passed away in December 2016. Her sudden death was a huge loss to the entertainment world, and a deeply personal one for Blunt.
The singer has spoken in the past about how Fisher was one of his biggest champions during his early music career, and how her home became both a creative refuge and a launchpad for his global success. She even helped inspire and support his songwriting, becoming a muse as well as a confidante.
Now, years later, Blunt’s candid revelation about why he asked her to be his child’s godmother adds a heartbreaking new layer to their story, one that fans of both stars will no doubt find touching and tragic in equal measure.
