Gary Lineker to Focus on Podcasting After BBC Departure

Gary Lineker has confirmed that he will not be moving to a rival broadcaster after leaving the BBC next year, choosing instead to concentrate on expanding his podcast empire.

The legendary football presenter will step down as host of Match of the Day in May 2025 after an incredible 26-year tenure and will fully depart the BBC in 2026 following the FA Cup and World Cup coverage.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Lineker revealed his future plans: “I don’t think you’ll see me doing much football, apart from the podcast. I’ll do the odd thing, but I don’t think you’ll see me appearing regularly on another channel.”

His focus will be on his hugely successful Goalhanger Podcasts, which produces hit shows such as The Rest Is Football, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is History. The podcast network has seen astonishing success, collectively achieving over 40 million downloads per month.

According to data from Podwatch, sourced from iTunes and Spotify, Goalhanger Podcasts currently occupies the top four spots in the UK podcast charts. With such impressive figures, Lineker’s post-BBC career appears to be thriving in the world of digital media.
