It’s one of television’s most enduring mysteries, and now, at last, we have an answer.
Gogglebox favourites Giles Wood and Mary Killen have finally explained the true meaning behind their unusual pet name “nutty”, a term of endearment that has intrigued fans for years.
The couple, who joined the hit Channel 4 series back in 2015, have become firm favourites thanks to their dry humour, intellectual debates, and often hilarious take on the week’s television. But viewers have long wondered why the pair frequently call each other “nutty”, and now, thanks to a recent Instagram clip, we have the full story.
In the short video, Giles and Mary can be heard using the nickname while chatting at home, prompting one curious fan to ask: “Where did the nickname nutty come from?”

Mary wasted no time setting the record straight. “We call each other ‘nutty’ because we both consider the other to be a bit mad,” she explained, adding a typically witty observation about their long marriage: “Giles has multiple personality disorder so he’s all sorts of people and one of them is a bit of a genius. The truth is we’re both neurotic.”
The revelation delighted fans, who were quick to share their reactions online. One commented, “I always thought it was some old-fashioned pet name, turns out it’s just as wonderfully bonkers as they are!” while another wrote, “This makes me love them even more. They really are national treasures.”
Giles and Mary first met when they were just 21 years old. Giles was then studying at Wimbledon Art School while Mary was working as a model. They married more than 30 years ago and went on to raise two daughters, though their daughters have chosen to stay out of the public eye.
Together, the pair have carved out a unique place on Gogglebox, bringing a mix of sharp observation, gentle bickering, and old-school eccentricity to the show. Giles, an artist, and Mary, a journalist and etiquette columnist, are known for their witty back-and-forth and the occasional glimpse into their famously cluttered Wiltshire home, affectionately dubbed “The Grottage” by fans.
This latest revelation is just another reason why viewers adore them, their honesty, eccentricity, and ability to make light of themselves. As one fan summed it up: “Gogglebox wouldn’t be Gogglebox without Giles and Mary and their ‘nutty’ charm.”
With the pair set to return for the next series, we can expect plenty more nutty moments to keep us entertained.
