Dame Emma Thompson has sparked fresh debate around intimacy and health after boldly declaring that sex should be “on the NHS”.
The 65-year-old screen legend made the comments during a special Q&A at The Kiln Theatre in North West London, following a screening of her critically acclaimed 2022 film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. In the movie, Emma plays a widowed, retired teacher who hires a younger male escort to explore her sexuality in later life, a role that’s proven to strike a powerful chord with many older viewers.
Speaking candidly during the discussion, Thompson said: “We need to learn about our own response to: what if when you're unwell, you can't make connections, but you need sex?
You need sex because it's part of our health plan, if you like. It should really be on the NHS. It should. It's so good for you.”
Her comments were met with laughter and applause, but also a sense of recognition from the audience, many of whom related to the deeper message.
Thompson went on to reveal that the impact of Leo Grande has been far more personal and profound than she anticipated.
“Since the film came out, quite a number of older friends of mine have done that, they’ve hired escorts,” she admitted. “They’ve taken that step because it made them realise that their sexual selves didn’t end with menopause or retirement.”
The Oscar-winner also praised the film’s message about removing stigma around later-life sexuality, especially for women:
“So much of our sexual culture is geared towards youth and performance. This film turned that on its head. It made people feel seen, and more importantly, that they’re allowed to want pleasure.”
