The Canary Islands Government declared an emergency alert this morning (Tuesday) after disruptions affected the region’s 112 emergency phone number, the result of a network update by telecoms giant Telefónica.
The issue, which emerged early this morning, impacted fixed-line services, including access to emergency numbers, prompting authorities to urge residents to use alternative contact numbers if they were unable to reach 112.
The Directorate General of Emergencies activated the Territorial Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands (PLATECA) due to the communications failure, treating the situation as a priority risk to public safety.
Officials later confirmed that the network update had been completed and that services had been fully restored by late morning. Telefónica stated the update had caused “isolated disruptions to some company services,” including emergency lines.
During the outage, residents were advised to call alternative emergency numbers 092 for the Local Police, 091 for the National Police, 062 for the Guardia Civil, and 080 for the fire brigade.
The Canary Islands’ Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) held an emergency meeting to assess the full impact of the outage and the response measures taken.
Telefónica has since confirmed that both phone and internet services are now back to normal across affected regions. The incident comes amid growing concerns over the resilience of critical infrastructure.
