Legendary music icon Sir Elton John has spoken candidly about the toll that his deteriorating eyesight has taken on his life, describing the experience as "distressing" and emotionally difficult. In a revealing new interview with The Times, the 77-year-old superstar shared how an eye infection has significantly impaired his vision, making daily life a challenge.
The Rocket Man singer first encountered serious trouble with his sight last summer while holidaying in the South of France. A sudden infection in his right eye left him with no vision on that side, and he revealed that his left eye isn’t in great shape either. “I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read,” Elton explained during the interview. “I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.”
For a man whose life has been filled with vibrant performances, dazzling costumes, and a deeply visual connection to music and the world around him, the impact has been more than physical. "It’s distressing," he confessed. "You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have."
Elton has long been known for his resilience, both in his personal life and professional career, and he remains determined to adapt. He credits his family, particularly his husband David Furnish and their two sons, for helping him keep a positive outlook during such a difficult time. “I still have my wonderful family,” he said, “and I can still see something out of here,” referring to his remaining vision in his left eye. “So you say to yourself, just get on with it.”
Despite retiring from touring in 2023 after wrapping up his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, Elton has stayed active creatively and remains a beloved figure in the world of music and entertainment.
