England midfielder Ella Toone has revealed the personal heartbreak she endured during the Lionesses’ dramatic Euro 2025 final victory over Spain, the death of her grandmother just hours before kick-off.
The 24-year-old Manchester United star started in the final in Basel, where England battled Spain in a tense match that ended 1–1 in normal time before the Lionesses triumphed in extra time. Toone played until the 87th minute, when she was substituted for Beth Mead, with the score still level.
Now, in an emotional post shared four days after the game, Toone revealed she had been carrying devastating news throughout one of the biggest moments of her career.
Her grandmother, affectionately known as Nanna Maz, passed away on the morning of the final.
Posting on Instagram, Toone shared nine photos of her nan alongside a moving tribute.
"Even in the highest of highs, life can hit you with the lowest of lows. My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. I have comfort in knowing she got to watch from the best seat in the house with Dad, her favourite person."

The midfielder continued:
"I’ll miss you forever nan but I’ll cherish the special memories we made. There aren’t enough words to sum up the person you were, but I’m so grateful you were my nanna. My football-loving, crazy, funny Nan."
Toone’s father, who was also a huge influence in her life, passed away previously, making the moment even more emotional for the young footballer.
Despite her personal loss, Toone put on a brave face on the pitch, showing her trademark determination and focus. Her composure under such heartbreaking circumstances has earned her praise from fans and teammates alike.
Messages of support poured in from across the football community after her post, with many commending her strength and professionalism during the final. Manchester United Women’s official account wrote: "We’re so proud of you, Ella. Sending all our love to you and your family."
Former England captain Steph Houghton commented: "Sending you the biggest hugs Tooney. Nanna Maz will be so proud of you."
For Toone, the Euro 2025 victory will forever be tied to bittersweet memories, the ultimate professional high shadowed by the deepest personal loss. But her tribute to her nan showed just how much her family means to her, both on and off the pitch.
She ended her Instagram post with a touching nod to her nan’s passion for football: "You were my biggest cheerleader, nan. Every time I step on the pitch, I’ll play for you."
