Londoners were left stunned on Friday afternoon when global music superstar Ed Sheeran popped up outside King’s Cross station for a surprise live performance.
The singer-songwriter appeared dressed in a vibrant pink T-shirt and took to a small stage set against a striking pink heart backdrop emblazoned with the word Azizam, the title of his new single. With just his acoustic guitar and trademark charm, Ed treated the growing crowd to a series of his biggest hits, including Shape of You, Perfect, and Bad Habits, turning the usually bustling station forecourt into a joyful pop-up gig.
The unannounced performance was part of a full day of promotion for Sheeran’s upcoming eighth studio album. Earlier that morning, he had been spotted travelling through the capital aboard a custom pink double-decker bus, waving to fans and sharing clips on social media as he stopped at various iconic locations around the city.
The lunchtime show quickly drew hundreds of fans and passersby, with many scrambling to capture the moment on their phones. Some were visibly emotional, while others simply sang along, making for a heartwarming scene of spontaneous celebration.
Azizam, which means "my dear" or "darling" in Persian, is already creating buzz among fans for its romantic tone and new sonic direction. Ed’s performance of the track marked its first public outing, adding another layer of excitement to the event.
As always, Sheeran kept things down-to-earth, chatting casually with the crowd between songs and thanking them for showing up. "This is what it’s all about," he said, smiling. "Just playing music and having fun."
With his album set for release later this year, and surprise appearances like this delighting fans, Ed Sheeran is clearly gearing up for another chart-topping chapter, and if Friday’s performance is anything to go by, he’s doing it in his own unmistakable style.
