Demolition begins on Puerto de la Cruz bus station after 16 years of neglect

A major transformation is underway in Puerto de la Cruz as demolition work has begun off the town’s long-abandoned bus station, which has been closed since 2009 and left to deteriorate.

This signifies the start of a redevelopment project aimed at breathing new life into one of the town centre’s prime locations.

Local authorities confirmed that the public planning company Gesplan has been commissioned to draw up the demolition plans, with a budget of €44,000 and a five-month timeframe for completion.

The demolition itself is expected to cost €1.5 million and clear a 15,000-square-metre site bordered by Paseos Hermanos Fernández Perdigón and Paseo del Jardinero, as well as the streets of El Peñón and El Pozo. The popular Plaza Francisco Afonso Carrillo also falls within the project area.

The Councillor for Sustainability, David Hernández, described the plan as “one of the most important urban developments in Puerto de la Cruz for decades” and said the goal is to breathe new life into the run-down site and turn it into a thriving centre for business and culture.

The old station was once a vital connection point for intercity travel in northern Tenerife, but was forced to close due to serious structural issues. Since then, it has stood empty a visible symbol of urban decline in the heart of the town.

Now, that space is set to be completely reimagined. Plans include a new public plaza for events, commercial buildings to support local businesses, a four-storey underground car park with 900 spaces to ease congestion, and a new building that will be used for everything from community events to council services and cultural activities.

All work will be carried out with a focus on sustainability, energy efficiency and public safety.
