Dame Deborah James, the inspirational cancer campaigner affectionately known as BowelBabe, has been honoured as one of the most empowering female role models of the past 25 years. Dame Deborah’s legacy as a passionate advocate for cancer awareness continues to inspire millions. Her BowelBabe Fund, which she launched to support life-saving cancer research, has raised an astonishing £16 million, a testament to her determination and the profound impact she made even in the face of her own battle with bowel cancer.

The list of the most empowering women includes a mix of real-life icons and fictional figures who have left an indelible mark on society. Among the top 20 are legendary singer Tina Turner, Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, acclaimed actresses Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, and even the beloved fictional character Bridget Jones. Other notable figures include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who dedicated her life to the fight for gender equality and civil liberties, as well as climate activist Greta Thunberg and Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai.

The survey of 4,000 adults revealed that the qualities most valued in a role model are honesty, kindness, and intelligence. It also highlighted the profound influence that role models can have, inspiring individuals to prioritize mental health, pursue leadership positions, and speak out on important issues. For some, role models have encouraged them to take time for themselves or be more open about their personal struggles.

Generational differences were also evident, with nearly two-thirds (67%) of older respondents indicating that they do not actively seek role models, compared to just 7% of Gen Z. However, both older generations and Gen Z identified family members and friends as their main sources of inspiration, while Gen Z is increasingly turning to influencers (34%), television (28%), and celebrities (23%).

In an era of digital connection, many respondents noted that they are most inspired by online content that showcases honesty and authenticity. More than a quarter (29%) are moved by people who share candid stories of overcoming hardship, while 15% appreciate content that is unfiltered and genuine.

Dame Deborah James' recognition as a leading role model highlights the enduring power of courage, compassion, and resilience, inspiring others to make a difference in their own lives and beyond.
