After nearly four decades at the helm, Dame Anna Wintour has officially announced she is stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue.
The 75-year-old British-born fashion icon, who has served as the face and force of the publication since 1988, made the announcement to Vogue staff on Thursday. While stepping back from the role she has defined for generations, she will remain a major figure at publisher Condé Nast, continuing her roles as Vogue’s global editorial director and the company’s chief content officer.
Wintour is the longest-serving editor in Vogue history, credited with transforming the American edition into a cultural powerhouse, blending high fashion with celebrity influence and a forward-thinking editorial voice. Known for her signature bob, sunglasses, and unshakable presence in the front row of every major fashion week, Dame Anna has influenced not only what people wear, but how fashion is discussed, represented, and respected globally.
Her departure marks the end of an era in fashion journalism, with her leadership having shaped everything from who sits on the Met Gala guest list to which designers become household names.
In her announcement to staff, Wintour revealed that a new position, Head of Editorial Content for American Vogue, will be created to guide the title into its next chapter. She expressed her desire to “help the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas.”
Dame Anna’s remarkable career includes being appointed Editor of British Vogue in 1985 before making the move to New York in 1988. Under her leadership, Vogue became a global authority on fashion, lifestyle, politics, and culture.

She was honoured with a damehood by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017 for services to fashion and journalism and earlier this year, King Charles named her a Companion of Honour, one of the UK’s most prestigious royal recognitions.
Her legacy is already firmly cemented, but her continued presence at Condé Nast ensures her influence over the fashion world is far from over.
The fashion industry and fans alike are reacting with a mix of admiration and nostalgia, with many tributes flooding in online. As Vogue prepares for its next chapter, one thing is clear: Dame Anna Wintour's legacy will forever define the magazine’s golden age.
