Jennifer Lopez has opened up about her divorce from Ben Affleck, describing it as the “best thing that ever happened” to her.
The Hollywood power couple, whose rekindled romance made headlines worldwide, shocked fans in August 2024 when Lopez filed for divorce on their second wedding anniversary. Citing “irreconcilable differences,” the split was finalised earlier this year, officially bringing their second attempt at marriage to an end.
While Lopez, 56, admitted she initially went through a “tough time” following the separation, she has since reflected on how the experience ultimately changed her for the better.
“It Helped Me Grow”
Speaking on Sunday’s episode of CBS News Sunday Morning with Lee Cowan, Lopez revealed:
“It changed me. It helped me grow in a way that I needed to grow.”
The singer-actress explained that the split forced her to reassess her life, priorities, and career. Although she confessed the early months post-divorce were difficult, she also noted that she came out of the experience stronger, more independent, and more self-assured.
“You get through it,” she said. “It was just about reconciling what was happening at home with how much joy I was finding in my work. It was hard, but in the end, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Life On and Off Set
Lopez recalled working on her new movie, Kiss of the Spider Woman, during the final stages of her marriage. Ironically, the project had Affleck attached as an executive producer.
“Every moment on set, every moment I was doing this role, I was so happy. And then it was like, back home, it was not great,” she admitted.
Balancing her thriving career with a collapsing marriage left her feeling conflicted, but Lopez now credits that period of her life for strengthening her resilience and reminding her of her passion for performing.

A Rollercoaster Romance
Lopez and Affleck’s relationship has long captured public attention. The pair first dated in the early 2000s, even getting engaged before calling it off in 2004. They rekindled their romance nearly two decades later, marrying in Las Vegas in July 2022 before hosting a larger celebration in Georgia.
Their second chance at love was seen by many as a Hollywood fairytale. But behind the glamour, cracks began to show, and by their second wedding anniversary, Lopez had filed for divorce.
Looking Forward
Now, Lopez appears determined to focus on her personal growth and her work. She has multiple film and music projects in the pipeline and continues to be one of entertainment’s most enduring figures.
While Affleck has remained relatively quiet about the split, Lopez’s comments suggest that she has made peace with the end of their marriage.
“It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary,” she reflected. “And now, I feel freer and more myself than ever.”
